Like most things from Italy, the tale of Amaretto is old and romantic. According to lore, in the year 1525, a church in the town of Saronno hired an artist to decorate their ceiling of with a fresco of the Virgin Mary. Needing a model, the artist hired a widowed innkeeper to stand in for his holy subject.
Once the painting was complete, the young woman was so impressed with her stunning depiction on the chapel roof, she decided to give the painter a token of her appreciation. Having very little money to her name, the widow infused apricot pits in brandy and presented him the bottle. The artist, a true romantic fell in love both with both the brew and the widow, and legend maintains they lived happily ever after.
