INFORMATION:
April Fool's Day. May Day. These among the other 363 days of the year are great days for enjoying Calendula, (Calendula officinalis). The reason? The name Calendula stems from the Latin kalendae, a word that means "the first day of the month". The hardy flower is more commonly known in the West as the Marigold, a name that refers to the Virgin Mary. So, perhaps we should add the Virgin Mary's feast day to the list of great days to enjoy Calendula. The flower has been used to make herbal remedies and teas since at least sixteenth century. This we know because of their appearance in Macer's Herbal, a famous treatise on herbs written at the time. Macer's Herbal states that Calendula "must be taken when the moon is in the Sign of the Virgin." Hmm, it seems we may also need to add the entire month of Virgo to the list of great dates to enjoy Calendula. The book also states that simply looking at Calendula will draw evil humors out of the body and strengthen the eyesight. This sounds like an everyday benefit. So, it looks like it may be easiest to simply state that every day is a great day to enjoy Calendula.

Now, the question you're probably asking at this point is: how best to enjoy this wonderful flower? We have a few suggestions. For one, the delicate color and mild flavor of the dried petals make them an easy additive to custom tea blends. As such they will give your teas an added visual appeal and light floral notes. The dried petals can also be used to brew a mild herbal infusion on their own. Calendula produces a tisane with delightful flavor that is high in flavonoids and makes an excellent end of the day beverage - perfect for sipping under a blanket in front of a fireplace. There are a multitude of other uses as well including, if you can believe it, scrambled eggs with calendula petals - simply stir the petals into the eggs moments before serving. Oh Calendula! What will you do with it and when?
